Hot dip galvanizing is the process of immersing fabricated steel into a bath of molten zinc (at least 98% purity), forming a metallurgical bond that provides a durable zinc coating. This layer shields steel from moisture and corrosion, offering long-term corrosion protection.

First is cleaning, which removes oil, grease, mill scale via degreasing, pickling, and fluxing. Second is dipping, where steel is immersed in molten zinc, allowing full coverage, including corners and recesses. Lastly is inspection, where coating thickness and finish quality are verified.

Unlike powder coating, which is a painted layer, hot-dip galvanizing uses zinc to create a self-healing, abrasion-resistant barrier. It requires minimal maintenance and lasts for decades (often 50+ years) with far less upkeep.

Plating alternatives like zinc electroplating offer thinner coatings that can wear quickly. In contrast, hot-dip galvanizing creates a thicker, metallurgically bonded layer that provides superior steel protection and rust proofing.

Zinc coating offers cathodic (sacrificial) protection. If the coating is scratched, zinc oxidizes first, sealing the steel underneath. This self-healing property makes it highly effective in preventing rust and corrosion.

All items must arrive free of paint, lacquer, primer, or oil. Some rust, scale, and dirt are acceptable. Hollow sections need vent and drain holes to ensure proper flow of cleaning and zinc penetration.
